Chalupa's Movies: Maria Full Of Grace

December 16, 2004

Maria Full Of Grace

This year's Audience Award winner at the Sundance Film Festival, and also recently named one of the ten best films of 2004 by the American Film Institute is indeed the shocking and disturbing "Maria Full of Grace." Sure, a movie about a 17-year-old drug mule is begging to be a little edgy but here, the movie hits much closer to home than many Americans would like to think.

Although some people are ignorant of how prevelant the drug culture really is here, "Maria Full of Grace" is a prime example of just one of the many ways drugs are being smuggled in and out of many different countries. The movie is simple yet profound, ordinary yet gripping, and altogether...quietly disturbing. I say quietly because there's nothing outlandish or spectacular about the plot essentially...however, it tends to be both of those things and much more by the time the film is done. It weaves in the kind of drama films normally pay millions for with the "show" rather than "tell" method down to a tee. While yes, I'm recommending this movie to most anyone (I even told my mom about it, even though I know she'll never see it) I'm still hesitant to say it was one of the year's best. Profound? Yes. Best film material? I don't think so, but why don't you see it and I'll let you be the judge of that.

Ok, rented and watched this one tonight. I definately liked it, but I agree with in the fact that I don't think it's top 10 of the year. I also agree that this movie is really good. Catalina Sandino Moreno's performance reminded me a lot of Audrey Tatou in Dirty Pretty Things. Have you seen that one? I think she did an excellent job in this movie. I also agree with your comment about how they do the show really well. It's the little things like posture, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc that can really make or break a performance.

I'd say this is one of the best foreign films I've seen this year. I was either reading or was talking to somebody about foreign films and it was said that too many people in America think foreign films are good just because they're subtitled. I really hope I'm not like that - cause if a movie is crap it doesn't matter what language they're speaking. Kinda like how Fez is a nerd in That 70's Show.

Chalupa, I don't think that you're one of those people. I think the reason so many foreign films are good is because we tend to get the best of the best foreign films in America...so I think if we were to see ALL of what other countries had to offer, they wouldn't be that good either. I don't know who is saying that (about people liking foreign films) but I think they're wrong and that's that. Also, glad you liked it...wonderful first feature film, even if it's not one of the year's very best. True, it was one of the better foreign films I've seen in an awhile. Actually, the only foreign film I've seen in the past year that I really didn't like (that I can recall) is "THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS!" It won best foreign film last year and oh boy, was it overrated. Just very "okay" and not that good of a film. Anyways, I wish we still lived by each other. Conversations about movies would be so much cooler then.
